Konstantinos Dabalis is an artist who creates
multileveled painting and sculpture. He mainly uses wood
and charcoal, in order to express his sceptism for empty
space and not just to picture the empty space. He
conveys the essence of painting to sculpture and
construction, meaning that form and space move in the
same texture as with painted form and background. In his
works void becomes the major frame, in which object is
released and becomes almost transparent.
His art is formed with shapes, sometimes heavy and
sometimes weightless, but always full of intensity,
fragile and at the same time strong, without fixed
contours, but also in absolute geometrical forms, with
their plastic substance eroded by the “invasion” of
space. All these are perceived as a dynamic active form.
The dialog between mass and space is dominant in all his
work and constitute the construction of surface. The use
of charcoal on wood tries to give the feeling of wear.
Minimalism and simplicity are the artist's philosophy
for space. He uses both, full space and void, in an
attempt to restore links between motion and volume, but
also between space and time. Shapes move towards each
other. Wood, coal, oil, space, molds, all combined in
sets, hollow space in order to build an new object and
this object in its turn creates new space.
It is quite clear that Konstantinos Dabalis’ work
communicates with Russian Avant-garde and especially
with Constructivism and Suprematism.
Ο Κωνσταντίνος Δαμπάλης είναι ένας καλλιτέχνης που κινείται πολυεπίπεδα και πολυδιάστατα ανάμεσα στη ζωγραφική και τη γλυπτική. Χρησιμοποιεί κυρίως το ξύλο και το κάρβουνο προκειμένου να εκφράσει τον προβληματισμό του για το κενό του χώρου και όχι απλά τον κενό χώρο. Μεταφέρει την ουσία της ζωγραφικής στην γλυπτική και την κατασκευή, δηλαδή μορφή και χώρος κινούνται στην ίδια σύσταση, όπως συμβαίνει με τη ζωγραφισμένη μορφή και το φόντο. Στα έργα του το κενό γίνεται το μείζον πλαίσιο μέσα στο οποίο το αντικείμενο απελευθερώνεται και γίνεται σχεδόν διάφανο. Σχήματα άλλοτε βαριά και άλλοτε αβαρή, γεμάτα ένταση, εύθραυστα και συνάμα γερά, χωρίς σταθερά περιγράμματα, αλλά και σε απόλυτες γεωμετρίες, με διαβρωμένη την πλαστική τους ουσία από την επίθεση του χώρου, που εκλαμβάνεται ως δυναμική ενεργητική φόρμα, συνιστούν την επιφάνεια κατασκευών που παραμένει πάντα η περιοχή συνάντησης μάζας και χώρου. Η χρήση του κάρβουνου πάνω στο ξύλο προσπαθεί να δώσει την αίσθηση της φθοράς. Η αναγωγή στο ελάχιστο και η απλότητα είναι καρποί της φιλοσοφίας του καλλιτέχνη για τον χώρο. Χρησιμοποιεί το γεμάτο και το κενό επιχειρώντας να αποκαταστήσει τους δεσμούς ανάμεσα στην κίνηση και τον όγκο, αλλά και ανάμεσα στον χώρο και τον χρόνο. Σχήματα κινούνται το ένα προς το άλλο. Ξύλο, κάρβουνο, λάδι, χώρος, φόρμες, όλα μαζί συνδυασμένα σε σύνολα κοιλαίνουν τον χώρο για να κατασκευάσουν το αντικείμενο και το αντικείμενο με τη σειρά του να δημιουργήσει νέο χώρο. Είναι σαφής η επικοινωνία του έργου του με τη ρώσικη πρωτοπορία και ιδιαίτερα με τον κονστρουκτιβισμό και τον σουπρεματισμό.
I was born in January 1990 in Serres,
Greece.
In October 2007, I enrolled in the University School of Fine
Arts in Thessaloniki, Greece. During my studies, I
specialised in drawing and focused on Constructivism and
Suprematism.
In June 2011, having been chosen as a representative of my
School, I presented my work in the 6th Biennale of Athens,
which took place in the Educational Institute of the Greek
National Bank.
In December 2013, I graduated (honours) from the School of
Fine Arts and received a prize for my dissertation, which
was entitled “A Critical Inquiry Into Form, Line and
Composition”.
In February 2014, together with other graduates of the
School of Fine Arts, I participated in an exhibition which
took place in the Macedonian Museum of Modern Art in
Thessaloniki.
In September 2017, I presented my artworks made of oil,
charcoal and wood in an individual exhibition that was
organised in the Cultural Centre of Serres. I have also
participated in several team exhibitions that were organised
as part of various art fairs and cultural events in
Thessaloniki and Serres.
I am a member of the Greek association of artists and, since
2015, I live and work in Athens.
